See, I lay a stone… a precious cornerstone for a sure foundation.
— Isaiah 28:16
◆ Cornerstone Fund Purpose
To preserve and maintain Calvin’s ministry resource space for our congregation and our community.
◆ Strategy
To create a dedicated, permanent fund sufficiently large that it will cover our major facility maintenance and renewal needs in the near term as well as grow over time to be large enough to cover annual facility expenses from earnings alone.
◆ Timeliness
We currently enjoy the 70-year legacy left by earlier generations. Now, WE have the task to preserve and protect the facility for the changing needs of the congregation and our community for many years to come.
◆ What sources will establish the Cornerstone Fund?
There are five sources:
- $400K in contributions from the congregation,
- $150K from facility rental income in the first five years,
- $300K from unrestricted bequests over the next 20 years,
- $130K in transfers from churches reserves, and
- $750K from earned income and interest over the next 20 years.
◆ How will the funds be spent?
The Cornerstone Fund will be used to fund major facility, grounds, and technology projects, defined as those $5,000 and above. The Facilities team, Hospitality team, Finance team, and Session have worked to identify major elements expected to need renovation or replacement within the next 20 years. Each year during the budgeting process, past expenses and future projections will be reviewed and updated. Session will approve each project funded by the Cornerstone Fund.
◆ How will the Cornerstone Fund be invested?
It will be invested with the New Covenant Trust Company (a subsidiary of the Presbyterian Foundation), a top-quality investment management group operating under the guiding values of the Presbyterian Church.
◆ How can everyone help build the Cornerstone Fund?
PRAY! Pray that God will continue to guide and bless this effort to plan for Calvin’s future years of ministry in Shoreline.
PRAY! Earnestly pray for God’s spirit to guide you as you consider what part you can play through this five-year start-up effort.
REFLECT on what the congregation and ministry of Calvin Church have meant in your life. How have YOU been blessed by your relationships with the people and with God? The Cornerstone team would like to hear your story! Whether that spans a year, a decade, or many decades at Calvin, we can inspire generosity in each other as we share the journey of faith we walk together.
◆ What can I give to build the Cornerstone Fund?
ALMOST ANYTHING, AT ANY TIME!
Think creatively. This is a long-term effort.
- What assets do we have? What could we give by making a five-year plan?
- What might be available at the end of our lives that isn’t available before then? What could we give by including the Calvin Cornerstone Fund in our estate plan (after ensuring that family members are provided for)?
SINGLE GIFTS can be given at any time. The earlier Calvin receives our gifts, the quicker the fund balance will grow and so will the annual earnings on the invested funds.
MULTIPLE GIFTS can be spread out over time. Small, recurring gifts can fit into any budget. (It is important that Cornerstone gifts be made IN ADDITION to current General Fund support.)

GIVING NON-CASH ASSETS can help reduce or eliminate capital gains tax when part or all of an assets is transferred to a charitable or-ganization before the sale. The donor may receive a tax deduction (as well as savings on income tax ) while being able to make a larger gift than anticipated.
By exploring less common ways to give assets entrusted to us, we may be able to increase our potential impact, experience personal tax savings and leave a legacy for generations to come.
Consult with your financial or legal professional to make non-cash and legacy arrangements.
